Egypt rewards context and sensible pacing. The best first journey usually links Cairo, Aswan and Luxor, but each place plays a very different role.
Start with Cairo and Giza
Cairo places ancient Egypt beside modern Egyptian life. The Giza Pyramids and Sphinx deserve time, while the Grand Egyptian Museum helps connect the people, objects and stories you will encounter later.
Choose Aswan for atmosphere
Aswan feels softer and slower. It is the gateway to Abu Simbel and a wonderful place for a felucca sunset, island scenery and Nubian culture.
Choose Luxor for the greatest concentration of sites
Luxor brings together the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple and Karnak. An excellent guide is especially valuable here; the meaning behind the walls matters as much as their scale.
